Helping Teens Drive/Ride Safely

November 3, 2007, is "Teen Driving SafeD Day."

On that day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, federal, state, local, and private organizations will set up displays and hold demonstrations to get teens and their parents involved in hands-on activities.

The theme of the day's events is: "One Day To Save The Rest Of The Days Of Your Life."

Highway safety experts will present seminars to teens and parents on the importance of safe teen driving and the crucial factor of experience in a wide variety of driving situations. In many cases, teens will be teaching teens, including the lesson that just one moment of irresponsibility behind the wheel can lead to a crash that devastates the life of the driver and possibly many others.

Admission is FREE! Parking at the Pennino and Herrity Buildings.

S.A.F.E - D is a nonprofit organization that is passionate, dedicated, and committed
to making teens and their parents aware of the consequences, effects and responsibility of driving.

This event has the support of the Fairfax County Police, Fire and Rescue
and Sheriff's Departments and many public safety agencies outside Fairfax, as well as the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Citizens Advisory Council and The Fairfax Partnership for Youth.

Bilingual Volunteers Sought

Posted by: DMK

Bilingual volunteers are needed to help contact non-English speaking members of the GCMarshall community. The greatest need is for placing telephone calls to foreign language-speaking parents to inform them about activities such as Back to School Night, College Night, the IB Program, etc.

If you are bilingual and are willing to volunteer at the school to help out, contact Parent Liaison Teresa Bennett at Teresa.Bennett@fcps.edu

Educational Consultant to Speak on College Application/Admission Process

Posted by: DMK

at 3:09 pm

Don Dunbar, author of What You Don't Know Can Keep You Out Of College: A Top Consultant Explains the 13 Fatal Application Mistakes and Why Character Is the Key to College Admissions, will be at Kings Park Library in Burke (located at 9000 Burke Lake Rd.) on October 16 at 7 pm.

The author plans a brief presentation on college applications and the admissions process. There will also be time for questions and answers. The program is free but you must register.

Adults and high school students are welcome. To register, call 703-978-5600 beginning October 2.

From Publishers Weekly
Editorial Review

Dunbar offers sage advice on what to do-or, more specifically, what not to do-during the often daunting college admissions process in order to ensure a more successful (or at least less painful) outcome. Dunbar's first tip for getting through the "marathon" of application is simple: "Pace yourself... commit to one work session per weekend." The steps that follow are equally manageable, designed to guide even the least prepared to the halls of higher learning. All the usual ins and outs are explored: essays, extracurricular, interviewing and getting waitlisted. More specific advice steers applicants away from dangerous essay topics and explicates the value of social sensitivity, while boxed asides ("First Aid," "Steps to Success," "Revising the Rule") provide spot treatment for mid-interview faux pas and winning strategies for asserting independence and positivity. Though he spends perhaps too much time on interviews-a step not every applicant will have to take-his background in prestigious East Coast prep school admissions makes this a top-notch resource for students applying to small private colleges or Ivy League institutions.
