Marshall’s Model UN Club at Georgetown University
At the final competition of the school year, Marshall’s Model UN Club team took top honors at the April 17-18 National High School Model Arab League Conference at Georgetown University.
The conference was attended by 240 students from 10 Mid-Atlantic schools, including Georgetown Prep, The Madeira School, Washington International School, and Montgomery Blair High School. Representing the Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia, Marshall’s 30-member delegation won the Best School Award and the Best (country) Delegation Award; and two members of its delegation – junior Annapurna Yeleswarapu and sophomore Olivia Baskerville -- were named to leadership positions for the 2010 National High School Model Arab League Conference at Georgetown.
In addition, four Marshall students – seniors Alex Blomme, Tarun Desai, Lauren Hahm and Emily Moonan -- chaired committee sessions, with Miss Hahm honored as an outstanding chair.
In judging that included written position papers, research and oral presentations, Marshall students representing the Kingdom of Jordan were honored as the conference’s best delegation from among the 21 countries represented in the Arab League. The Jordanian delegation consisted of Hannah Goldberger, Brandy Allen, Olivia Baskerville, Marion Gottlieb, Saera Khan, Zuhayr Ahmed, Yomna Sarhan, Noha Zeitoun, Ali Amirghassemi, and Annapurna Yeleswarapu.
Winning top individual awards as outstanding delegates were: juniors Hannah Goldberger, Noha Zeitoun, Rumen Hutchinson, Noha Zeitoun, and Thomas Antony and sophomore Zuhayr Ahmed. Meriting honorable mention were: senior Saera Khan, junior Simrun Soni, sophomore Ashton Garriott, and freshman Ali Amirghassemi. Also contributing to Marshall’s success at the Model Arab League were team members Brian Donahue, Iriat Faisal, Bruce Ferguson, Phil Grudier, Wen Kelly, Brian Potter, Johara Alangari, Maha Hassan, Zareen Raza, Anita Palmer, Adam Treece, Mazin Ali, and Thamanna Nishath.
The MUN Club’s next conference will be the training conference, “My First MUN VI,” hosted by Marshall’s MUN Club on September 26. Sign up forms for that conference will be included in the back-to-school packet picked up by parents in late August.
